Werewolf party game — rules, variations and how to play
The Werewolves of Millers Hollow is one of the most popular party games in France — and for good reason: it creates tension, teamwork and humour that are hard to find elsewhere. Here’s everything you need to know to run a great game.
The basic rules
Objective:
- The Villagers must eliminate all the Werewolves.
- The Werewolves must stay alive until they equal or outnumber the Villagers.
How a round works:
- Night: the Moderator asks everyone to close their eyes. The Werewolves wake up and choose a victim. The Seer wakes up and discovers one player’s role. The other special roles then take their turns.
- Day: the Moderator announces who was eliminated during the night. The group debates and votes to eliminate a suspect. The player with the most votes is eliminated and reveals their role.
- Repeat until one side wins.
Classic roles
| Role | Side | Power |
|---|---|---|
| Villager | Village | No special power |
| Werewolf | Werewolves | Eliminates one player each night |
| Seer | Village | Discovers one player’s role each night |
| Witch | Village | One healing potion and one poison potion (each can be used once) |
| Hunter | Village | When killed, eliminates one player of their choice |
| Cupid | Village | Links two players together as lovers |
| Little Girl | Village | Can spy on the Werewolves at night (risky) |
The most fun variations
The Village Idiot: a Villager who, if voted out, reveals their identity and stays in the game but loses the right to vote. It creates some hilarious situations.
The White Werewolf: a third side that wins alone. Every other night, the White Werewolf can eliminate another Werewolf.
The Fortune Teller: can see which side a player belongs to (Village/Werewolves), but not their exact role.
How to play on Togezer
Togezer includes a digital version of Werewolf in the app: automatic role distribution, night rounds managed without a physical Moderator, and an interface designed for large groups. No cards needed, and no risk of cheating by looking at someone else’s cards.
Ideal for groups of 6 to 20 people.
Tips for a great game night
- The Moderator is key. They must stay neutral, keep the pace moving and host the game without influencing it.
- Adjust the roles to the size of the group. One Werewolf for every 4–5 players is a good ratio.
- Give the debates enough time. That’s where much of the fun happens.
- Play several games. The first one often goes a little wrong — that’s normal.
Togezer — play Werewolf at your next party, with no cards or equipment.
